Up until now, BMW owners were instructed to change their cars’ oil once every 15,000 miles in the US. However, starting with models built this month, that will be shipped out as model year 2014, the rules are about to change.
From now on, the recommended oil change interval will be set to 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 12 months, 5,000 miles less (8,000 km) than before, when the time interval added up to a maximum of 24 months.
This applies to all cars, including the new diesels that will arrive on the American continent this year. The new vehicles will have the new service intervals programmed into the on-board computers and will warn drivers once their maintenance is due.
Even more, the new BMWs will be fitted with new software that computes the actual optimum maintenance requirements based on how the car is being exploited. Such adjustments can result in variations of the 10,000 mile (16,000 km) interval.
